Inspired

I finished a two week road trip and being in a car all those miles sure stunted my creative soul.  Normally, I make stops on my trips that inspire me, but this trip was way different.  The destination was a family wedding, driving was the goal.  I was able to stop and visit a few friends who are creative souls and I realized how I haven't been in the mood to work in the studio.  Before I left I cleaned up my studio space and I'm glad I did.  Today I started making some necklaces.  I haven't made jewelry in a long time and it feels good to get back at it.  Next I'm going to finish my soldered pendants!

Dance studio fundraiser.

A friend of mine is having a fundraiser for a bellydance studio that was recently robbed.  She asked for donations to be auctioned.  I'm sending over two pieces a simple glass soldered bellydancing charm and a metal charm "DANCE"  on the outside and "with me" in the inside.  I wish her luck with her fundraiser!

Meet Betty Jean!

Betty Jean has been my friend since we were in kindergarten at Roosevelt School.  OMG, she's funny, loud, honest, loving and open hearted.  Boy the stories we could tell!   I love seeing her!  I'm so proud of her, we are great examples of anything is possible!

Best hug ever!

She bought one of my necklace pieces!  Perfect on her.

Seed bead inspired

While I watched The Voice, big fan of Sawyer Fredericks, who by the way, WON!

I have been stringing seed beads onto waxed linen cord making bracelets and necklaces.  This has been addicting!  Some I've crocheted and others are strung on with no pattern.  Taught myself to make a sliding knot closure and I love the adjustability that offers.  Big thanks to (Youtube DIY videos).   I've been going through my seed bead collection so the options are endless.  The other thing is making some really cool charms and going through my collection of charms and add ons.  Like I said the options in design are endless.

Beaded necklaces

I've been making beaded necklaces for the past month.  I have tons of seed beads and thought it was time to see what I could make with them.  I made some charms and found some pretty cool charms in my stash of stuff. This particular collection was sent off to a shop in Lincoln, Nebraska -- Guru Honey.  I didn't take a very good photo of them...not sure what I was thinking, I'm usually pretty good at documenting my jewelry.  I haven't stopped making these cool necklaces.  I'll have to post on my Facebook page when I have more to sell.

Studio time

My mom taught us to crochet when we were kids.  The first lesson was how to hold the thread/tension in one hand and how to hold the crochet needle in the other.  First stitch we learned was the simple chain stitch. We would sit and do nothing but make a long long crocheted chain.  The past few days I've been taking what I learned from that first lesson and making jewelry.  Strung beads on some waxed linen thread and crocheted the chain stitch over and over and over, again.  Thanks, Mom

While out running errands I stopped in one of my favorite bead stores, Beads & Findings International and she had tons of seed beads.  Lucky me!

Small Business Saturday!

I crossed paths with my friend Lillie in April 2014.  We had a conversation and I hung up the phone thinking how could it be that I met someone so like me.  Since that time we have spent time sharing ideas, dreams, crafts, and all the other girl crafty stuff.  This weekend she was invited to participate  in this event at ThirdSpace.  We went to a meeting and I loved the energy of the place and the other artist!  So wish us luck and here's a sample of the fun things I'm selling.

Studio time

I don't always mind nights I can't sleep because my studio is inviting.  I got lost in there tonight and finished some pendants.  These designs have been dancing around in my head for weeks.  One thing I used was metal buttons.  I have quite the collection and I came across something about pounding metal buttons.  I loved the look and especially love the how they look with the bigger beads.  I can't wait to wear these...oh yeah , they'll be for sale!

Husker football + GuruHoney = fun times & good things!

It's that time of year.... Husker football, Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, Nebraska!
To all my family and friends who live in Lincoln and those of you who plan to travel to Lincoln for a game.
There's this really neat shop in Lincoln, it's not downtown or near the stadium, but it's worth the trip to North 48th Street. I'm challenging you to travel a little bit east and check it out!
I was fortunate to meet the owner, Andrea Watkins. Her shop is full of unique gifts, graphic t-s...hirts, framed art, home accents, baby wear, accessories and much more. It has my jewelry pieces for sale, too!

Please hit the share button and share with all your Facebook friends and give me and GuruHoney a loud Husker spirited shout out!! Thank you so much.

Etching

Some of my samples I previously did

A friend of mine asked about etching metal.  He has a project he would like to do.  It involves etching 1/2" strips with sayings.  He wants to make them into bracelets.  Today we did a trial run so he could see the steps it takes to finish one piece of brass.  He plans to make 50 bracelets.  I had the supplier cut my sheet of 24 gauge brass into 6"x1/2" strips.
Step 1:  rounding down the corner edge on the grinder
Step 2: find tune the edges with a fine hand file
Step 3:  clean up using a very fine steel wool
Step 4:  decide what design you want on the strip using a sharpie or use a rubber stamp     with permanent ink or both.
Step 5:  mount each strip on a piece of tape, we didn't have electrical tape so we used masking tape.  Each strip is mounted on the tape with the design side up.
Step 6:  using a glass pyrex dish pour the etching solution about 1/4 inch deep.
Step 7:  suspend each strip in the solution and set timer for 30 minutes.
Step 8:  check metal at 30 minute mark.  We liked the etching so we removed the metal strips.
Step 9:  nuetralize the strips using baking soda in a dish.
Step 10: rinse in cool water and clean using a rag.
Step 11:  polish up the strips using steel wool.
Step 12: using a black patina solution brush it on and let set for a few minutes.
Step 13:  clean off the solution and rinse strip in cool water.
Step 14:  polish with steel wool and all the raised areas will polish up.
Done!  Oh no, we're not...we still need to make them into bracelets!  Remember he wants to make 50 of them!  Big job but he's very excited and happy with the results of our trial run.   We spent two hours in our trial run.

Making earrings

I noticed I don't have very many pairs of earrings in my personal collection.  Not sure why, but I'm bound to change that.  I've been looking for inspiration for color combinations.  I shopped for beads and found I really gravitate to blues and turquoise shades.  I also pulled out all my seed beads and will be using them in my designs.  I need to get my designs on paper and outa my head.  Some days I find I can't sleep because I have so much creative visions in my head!  Actually, that's what's going on now....can't sleep.  I got my jewelry sketchbook out and pencil in hand!  Stay tuned.

Owner/designer of GuruHoney

ANDREA WATKINS
GuruHoney:  2701 N 48th Street, Ste 2  Lincoln Nebraska

www.facebook.com/guruhoney.design

Here's some back story... on a previous trip to Lincoln I stopped in the GuruHoney shop on a random day at a random time but not at a random place.  While in college I lived up the street and was familiar with the neighborhood, University Place, along north 48th Street.  I used to walked pass these buildings all the time.  I loved her shop and even bought the coolest purse/bag there!   I got good vibes and thought someday I'd like to ask about putting my jewelry in her shop.  The clerk was very friendly and we exchanged Facebook information and she gave me a little information about the owner and the shop.  I didn't have my jewelry with me and it just didn't feel right at the time, plus I knew I would be back.

On my most recent road trip I contacted Andrea Watkins to talk about my jewelry.  The minute I walked in and met her I got the goosebumps!  I set down my jewelry pieces and she loved them and again... I got goosebumps!  I have seven pieces for sale in her shop!

Here's some tidbits about Ms. Andrea Watkins and GuruHoney....

She went to college and graduated with a psych major, she was offered a job at a hospice and a marketing type job.  She took the marketing job because of the hours.  She worked her way up in the marketing field.   But she found she clicked with graphic design.  She is self-taught in graphic design,  she bought a big book on graphic design, studying all she could.  Keep in mind this was before the internet and Google.  She then took a "leap of faith" and left her stable job and went with a start up company.  She became creative director of a team of designers and the company became very successful.
Three years ago, her dad got sick and he was dying of cancer.  She spent time with him and he was placed in Hospice the last six months of his life.  She recalls how full circle life was … being offered a job with Hospice when she graduated college.
Upon his death she was trustee of his estate and inherited set of buildings along North 48th Street in the University Place neighborhood.  He did a lot for the area.  It was a huge project for Lincoln, trying to revitalizing the neighborhood.  The building GuruHoney is located  in is one of the buildings that belonged to her dad.  She once again took a "leap of faith", quit her job and became a landlord & a property manager.  It wasn't easy and she really struggled her first year.  With another "leap of faith", she figured since she had the building space why not open her own shop.  Along with a partner she opened GuruHoney.  She traveled to India with her previous job and lived there for six months.  She loved the culture and the name is a result of brainstorming and the thought of merging the culture of the east with the west.  Guru = high thinking   Bee = symbolic of hard work.  Creative & creating something good.  She began to design tshirts and was quite successful and told a story about one of her tshirt designs was worn by Mylie Cyrus in a photo shoot with People magazine.  She continues to revitalize the area in the spirit of father’s legacy and his vision for the area.  By the way the buildings are beautiful and the area is awesome.  It has a great vibe, a boho vibe.
I asked her how she refuels her soul.  She does Kosama – type of boot camp workouts, she loves to ride her bicycle, Lincoln has a great series of bike trails and yoga is another way she has found to refuel her soul.  She used to teach yoga and recently is finding herself being asked to teach yoga, again.
She described herself as someone who has never been one that is not up for a challenge.  She talked about how tough it is because it’s a combination of what you know is in you and what you can do but it’s really hard because you feel you need a formal title, like artist, painter, designer, etc.  Creative people need to quit telling themselves “I’m not that”.  People wait around to be told they are “that” when they already are “that”.
I really enjoyed meeting Andrea Watkins!   She is a creative soul with so much ambition, nothing can stop her.

Street fair was a challenge today

First of all, too much Phoenix traffic (always) which didn't make it easy to get to Casa Grande... ugh, should of paid attention to time, then again, time runs in odd ways in my world.  In all ended up with setting up late, but the spot was nice and the artists I was next to were nice.  My table was ready, but I noticed not much foot traffic.  As the night went on, still not much foot traffic.  A cool breeze showed up, though. All us participants closed up an hour early because again, not much foot traffic.  Oh well, on to the next event or two.

Street fair time, again.

I'm going to be at the Casa Grande Street Fair on December 3rd!! I've been working hard in the studio to have a nice selection of pendants and earrings.  I'm also including some holiday crafts, stockings, garland, etc.  I can't wait should be a blast.  I'll post the exact info later this week.

This reminded me of the photo I got in my email.  Last spring at the street show in Casa Grande I sold a pendant to Pam.  Pam explained she was getting married in Hawaii and she needed gift for her partner.  She liked a number of pendants but finally choose a purple pendant with a heart.  The plan was to give it to her partner after their ceremony in Hawaii.  Pam was kind enough to send me a photo!  Congratulations to them.

Studio time

Been hanging out in the studio this week.  At this moment I smell like solder!  Been soldering all morning.  I started my week bending wire for earrings and soldering chain links I'm gonna use for earrings.

I had bezels made in the shape of hearts from a previous day in the studio.  I also added a round cooper wire to the design.  The cooper wire was tough to bend and even tougher to cut.  But, I found a handy heavy duty wire cutter in the tool box....it worked wonderfully!   I had already cut metal and filed down the edges.  It was time to match pieces.

This is what I did this morning...soldering soldering soldering.  I love this part but I must admit it's a smelly process, I must have my ceiling fan on and the window open.  It's breezy today and that helps move the air around in the studio.

I'm taking a break from the studio for the next few hours to meet friends I haven't seen in awhile.  I love working in the studio and boy it does take so many steps to end up with my creations.  Break time!

In the studio, etching metals.

I've been wanting to try etching metals, again.  I haven't done it in a long time.  I use a chemical called PCB Etchant Solution which you can get at Radio Shack.  It's mainly used in computer motherboard circuit work.  Make sure to use safety glasses and gloves when working with it.

I clean up the metal strips and stamped images and drew designs on the strips.  I used a permanent ink pad and a sharpie.  I also stamped some of the copper rings.

I used a glass dish and remember not to ever reuse the dish for food.  It belongs in the studio now.  The metal strips  are placed on clear packing tape with the design side up.  The strips are floated on the solution but I did place the rings right into the solution.

I set the timer for one hour, but I got busy and ended up letting the metal sit for two hours.  Since my PCB solution was old it needed two hours to get the results I wanted anyways.

Here's how they look!  Awesomeness.

I bent one of the strips into a bracelet and love love love it.  I will experiment with a clasp of some kind and maybe some embellishments.  Stay tuned....

This is the strip I stamped circles on...way cool.

Sneak peek on rock rings

I got these stones in Flagstaff, AZ, but I really didn't pay attention to the names of the rocks.  I just liked the look and shape of them.  I needed to make sure they had a flat bottom so I could solder them to a metal ring band.  I'm back in the studio, they're soldered on to the bands, put a patina on them, just need to clean and polish.  I tried them on and I love love love them.

There's been some earring making going on around here

I had left over handmade chain links & never wanting to toss anything
in the trash, I used them in the earrings.  I love how they turned out.
These are using the chain links.  I love the patina look, what do you think?

These are an inch and half size circles.  Some think they can't wait a bigger
size earring, but they hang so nicely you won't even notice you're
wearing them.

These are like the bigger one's but only about 3/4" circle.  Orange is the
new color of the season,  I love all shades of orange.
More earrings.  I've sold a few of these already but some are still available .
If you're interested, email me at jobi.tinajera.arens@cox.net
I would love you to wear a pair of my earrings!
